About DeMunge

What is DeMunge?

DeMunge is a free service for converting PDF bank statements for direct import into your favorite book keeping software.

We convert to QIF (Quicken), CSV (Excel), Text, XML and BK1 formats.

Why use DeMunge?

Most bookkeeping software tools accept manual data input as well as automated import from files downloaded through your bank's website. These ways of inputting data have two problems:

• Manual input is laborious, time consuming and error prone; and
• Input from a bank's export makes reconciliation against their statement difficult because transaction dates on a paper based statement often do not match those in the export file.

DeMunge solves these two problem. We use advanced optical character recognition (OCR) techniques to convert your PDF statements into raw data. We check the total from the transactions match the totals on the statement and we return the raw data to you in the format of your choice.

How to use DeMunge?

There are three ways you can use DeMunge:

• Through our website by using the online form here.
• Via bookkeeping software like BK1 designed to make the most of the DeMunge system; or
• If you are a software developer, you can use our publicly available interface to make the benefits of DeMunge available to your clients (contact us for more information).

What does DeMunge cost to use?

DeMunge is free while in Beta. There shall be a small charge per bank statement converted when DeMunge comes out of beta.

What's with the name DeMunge?

DeMunge is based on the achronym munge, a term used by computer programmers to mean 'modify until not guessed easily'. It can also be used to mean 'mash until no good'. We figure that much of the data we try to get into our bookkeeping software has been mashed. The best source of this data is one that has been around for decades - the humble bank statement and now with DeMunge, access to this data is just a few clicks away.
